It startles me how many major motion pictures succeed in robbing everyone blind financially and intellectually. Where is the mental challenge? Why must we, a seemingly clever society, be forced to liquefy our brains in front of a 50ft. screen? There is a difference between escapism and utter ignorance. I am not talking about mindless comedies that are designed to strip you of your wits. I speak not of Blue Crush or Scorpion King and other films that aren't sure whether they are movies or liverwurst. I speak of movies that are made by very talented filmmakers who treat the audience like idiots and get away with it. I will now proceed to rant about two of this years' summer blockbusters, two films that I enjoyed, two films that I paid money (multiple times) to see. Hell, I even love these films: Spiderman and Signs. These films have two things in common: they both start with 'S' and they all possess one or more aspect that insults the intelligence of humanity.

So yes I work in a beer store. To expand more, this store sells BEER!, and clothing with beer labels. That's it, beer and beer ecessories for one brewer (i.e.. BIG Brewery, and beside it my small store.) Now I know everyone has weird, fun, scary or just over the wall bizarre retail stories, but when you mix that with large amounts of Ale/Lager you get The Beer Store Musings.

Although Tilley will probably jump up and down and drink more beer 'cause I'm writting a semi-technical article, this just has to get out. Today while happily working away at my desk (as much as one can at work) I typed the stupid "rm <my favourite irreplaceable file>" into my Linux shell. rm is the same as del in DOS (remember that?)... there are no prompts, there's no warning, you just carry on for a couple for seconds and notice the directory is one file smaller.

Penelope Ann Miller plays, somewhat unlikely, a stripper who has a romance with Pacino's character. The film finds De Palma tempering his more outlandish moves (think of Body Double or Snake Eyes) just as he did with the popular Untouchables and Mission: Impossible. But while Carlito's Way was not commercially successful and never rises to the level of greatness, it is a genuinely compelling movie graced with a fine performance by Pacino and a surprising one from Penn.

The film is not as fast paced or gripping as Scorsese's earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and GoodFellas), but it's still absorbing.

Father Alex (Ledger), a priest of an almost extinct heretical order of the Catholic Church, is told that his mentor has committed suicide in Rome. So he, along with his recently "released" mental patient of a girlfriend (Sossaman), meets up with the only other surviving member of their order (Addy) and trots off to Rome to find out what's going on. Once in Rome (you do as the romans do? ^_~), Father Alex discovers the existence of the Sin Eater (Furmann). The Sin Eater absolves a dying man of guilt by "eating" it and taking it on himself. His role is to absolve those to whom the Church refuses to administer last rites, thus giving them eternal salvation. With a dying Pope and the power struggles of the up and coming cardinals as a backdrop to the drama, Father Alex must solve the mystery of how the Sin Eater is related to his mentor's death, and whether or not this is all just a bit part in a larger production.

BizMov: Robbie the Reindeer in Hooves of Fire

Robbie the Reindeer is as short as many of the made-for-TV classics that have preceded it, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but so much action, zippy dialogue, and witty visual puns have been packed into its 29-minute running time that you'd swear it was longer. For this reason, it also stands up to repeat viewing better than some of the more straightforward programs of recent years, although it is directed toward a slightly older audience--age 10 and up--due to some sexual innuendo. Adults may get a kick out of the fact that the story line was actually inspired more by Rocky than by Rudolph. As in Rocky, there's a supportive female (Donner) and a crusty old trainer (Old Jingle). Together they help Robbie get in shape for the Reindeer Games, where he'll have the chance to show Santa whether he has the right stuff or not. Fans of Aardman Animations should appreciate the detailed animation and clever humor. The cream of Britain's comic crop provides the voices, including Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous) as Donner. Pop singer Robbie Williams narrates the story, and Mark Knopfler provides the music.

"Run Ronnie Run" is a cult flick - if you can consider 18-29 year old males a cult - which sticks the trailer park trash Ronnie Dobbs character which funnyman David Cross honed on HBO's "Mr. Show" in the center of a full length feature film. The result is the only thing it can be, given its market and the Dobbs character; a lame comedy raunch romp which goes straight for the crotch. The recognizable names in the credits, such as Jeff Goldblum or Gary Shandling are quickie walk-on's only. That's all you need to know. If you're a Ronnie fan, you'll probably like this flick. You can bet HBO made it with your dollar in mind. If not, be prepared for a lot of mindless vulgarity in a very ordinary flick which, to date, hasn't been reviewed by any credible critics nor received any awards.
